Introduction:
The purpose of this document is to provide information for starting a local chapter of the Agile Project Leadership Network (APLN). This document will continue to be updated as APLN grows and learns from the experience of developing the APLN on a local, national and international level.
APLN encourages new chapters to contribute to this document. If you have information to share about starting a new chapter that can benefit others please send this information to webmaster@apln.org.
Steps to Starting a Local Chapter:
Ways to attract members:

Contact APLN for a list of existing members in the area the chapter will be located. (Geographically, zip code, etc.)

Inviting the existing members to attend a planning session to start up a local APLN chapter.

Contact professional colleagues and personnel friends (that would benefit and be interested) and invite them to attend the planning session to start up a local APLN chapter

Contact the local Chamber of Commerce for a list of non profit and professional organizations in your area. Review the list of the organizations - some of their membership may be interested in learning and joining ALPN. ( Offer a guest speaker to these organizations)

Ask the local Chamber of Commerce if they have an announcement section on their Web Site, Newspaper etc that they can inform members of the new local chapter of APLN.

Send out a news release to local and trade newspapers with the date, time and place of the meeting.

Contacting business section editor of a local newspaper or weekly business magazine insert informing them of the new developing local chapter.

Research contact at the local, state and federal agency in the area, send a letter or news release to them about the new local chapter. i.e. Department of Labor, Economic development
First Meeting:
Proposed discussion items for the first meeting:
- Outline APLN
- Declaration of Interdependence
- What is the goal for the Chapter?
- What type of membership do we wish to achieve?
- What level and type of visibility do we hope to achieve for the chapter?
- What are some strategies for achieving these goals?
- What relationships do we wish to have with other organizations’?
- Establish reoccurring meeting time and place
- Volunteers for setting up and helping with the next meeting
- Volunteers for action items that come out from the meeting (s).
Questions and Thoughts that will need to be researched and discussed by each chapter:

Do you need to file paper work with a government agency to be established as a Non Profit Organization?

Does the chapter want to charge a membership fee?

If a membership fee is to be charged, a bank account will need to be established, as well as identified officer of the organization.

Questions pending answers from National and International APLN level:
Can chapters be under the umbrella of the national 501 ( C) 6 non profit status?
If yes, do they need to complete paper and submitted it to APLN, local, state or federal government?
If no, where do chapters file for Non Profit status at local, state or federal level?
Are local chapter members required to join the National and International APLN in order to belong to a local chapter?
Do local chapters need to pay dues etc to the national or international APLN?
